Past events -- discussions!

In the past two weeks, we discussed very interesting topics -- Gender Identity in Second Life and The Buying frenzy - SL and the consumerism madness!

The topic Gender Identity in Second Life provided fertile ground for a very lively debate! One of the issues we talked about was what prompts the choice of certain charaterisctics for one's avatar, some mentioned personal fulfilment, a certain vanity even, esthetics, provoking the status quo, or wanting to attract others. It was also defended that the looks of the avatar can be a projection of what one wants/wishes/plans to become in RL in the future and how important that is, namely for transgenders.

Everyone agreed that stereotypes play an important role in the looks of avatars, making the outside, idealized, often oversexualized representation (through clothes, AOs, HUDs, etc.) be, in many instances, more important that the inside values. When asked why people choose non-human avatars, the group stated that it could be a way to draw attention to the inner values, rather than the outside look. At some point, the topic of deceiving others came to the discussion, as we were talking about not revealing one's gender in RL when the SL gender is different. The opinions got divided between not mixing RL and SL and considering SL an extension of RL.

To end the discussion, this conclusion was presented -- gender related issues are a complex theme both in Real Life and in Second Life, and one of great importance too as our avatars reflect much of who we are and of what our interpersonal expectations can be!

Then we discussed the Buying frenzy! - Second Life and consumerism madness. In this Holiday Season, there seems to be a buying craze people go through! That was what triggered this discussion. Consumerism in Second Life was defined, everyone agreeing that it was not much different than in RL., except for the fact that in SL consuming includes some things like skins, eyes, tails, etc!

Most agreed that we brought into SL the consumeristic culture we have in RL and expanded it a notch, as it is easier for someone with a low financial ability to have a fairly well-off experience in Second Life! We then talked about how a lot of what is consumed in SL is status related or the result of peer pressure, perhaps of certain groups for whom there is a specific (dress)code. When the group was asked whether "having more" made their SL experience better, more enjoyable, people were adamant -- no!

To conclude the discussion, it was stated that consumerism in Second Life might be a tricky issue, yet to some extent it served the purpose of showing who we were, what we were and our expectations as well!

These were two very interesting discussions, with great groups taking part and sharing their experiences and opinions! Well done! :)

Past event - Party with M-Set!

At LnL we make sure everything is done for fun! Many of you may not know, but LnL started as a way to join old friends, even before there was any store. As London and I started thinking about the possibility of opening a store, the social side of LnL continued to be one of the top priorities. At a very early stage, we decided that having a store would certainly not mean to forget the first reason for creating LnL. So, in the locations we have been so far, there were always lounge and meeting areas. At the moment we have discussions (in the lower floor) and parties (on the roof) on a regular basis.
This brings me to the awesome party (check the pic above!) we had the other day with two amazing DJs -- Able and SnowLeopard -- spinning some cool sounds for us. They belong to a great team called M-Set and they will be back at LnL!! :) Keep an eye on this blog for updates! If you'd like to know more about them, check their group M-Set in-world and their blog online!

And that is certainly true for the atmosphere itself! London and I thought the store needed a bit more space, so a new level has been added! Those who have visited us said that it looks great, that there is the same good feel about it! It is so encouraging to hear this! A special thank you for your words, Paco! :)

Party yesterday at LnL!

London and I decided, on the spur of the moment, to throw a party for all LnLers and visitors to the store! We had a pretty colourful dance floor, for whose change in colour I was totally not responsible, I must say adamantely! We also had a bit of fireworks that gave a cool look to the roof of the store (yep we were on the roof, check out the photo)! It was about four hours of great music chosen by London! We had a few requests just to see if the DJ would do well. ;) Haha and I must say, he did a GREAT job!! Lots of friends dropped by, new and old, some we hadn't seen in a loooooong time, so it sure was a lot of FUN! :)

Full House!!!

The discussion we had Tuesday was about the topic -- The "intellectual type"...! -- help, can I survive in SL?! It was a lively discussion with a full house, as you can see by the photo!!! The participants were simply the best!!!
The premises I presented for this discussion -- No, I don't want to go shopping! No I don't want to have a business! I just want to participate in interesting events! Where are they?! Is Second Life turning into fertile ground for malls only? Or is there room for culture as well?
Everyone agreed that SL is in many ways oriented towards builders, scripters, merchants and buyers. Residents trying to attend events other than those in the club scene are often faced with the difficulty of finding quality alternatives. Things like tech problems (lag being unanimously considered the worst) or SL being more and more of a commercial reality were some of the most intensively debated topics. The group also stressed the importance of having a comprehensive and effective way of making culture events more visible, for instance networking at the group level. Some mentioned the fact that it was not easy to promote culture events when there are tiers to be paid and other costs, while others supported the idea that Second Life is what each and all residents make of it, meaning that by creating opportunities and common grounds, issues like costs can be overcome.
It was a very short hour! There was a lot to talk about and time flew!! Everyone was amazing!! :)
See you next week, Tuesday, at 2pm SLT for a new topic and an hour of great ideas and awesome people!

This is a very elegant outfit appropriate for everyone, that reminds us of the Napoleonic uniforms! You will enjoy it for its uniqueness!

Hunt at S.I.C!

London, Pascal a friend of ours and I went to S.I.C. to do their latest hunt. It takes place in sick5 in a very well built post-apocalyptic atmosphere. The sim is very well done and you do see that a lot of care and effort have been put into it. It is well worth visiting, even if you're not doing the hunt! This hunt is Chapter 1, so hopefully more challenging hunts will follow. As a bit of extra information, you may want to check out this link which is S.I.C's official website. It's in Japanese though. If you don't speak the language, try using a translator, even in-world, to get a bit of the story behind the hunt. The website has a video showing the Prologue as well (with subtitles). One important hint before you start, as your first task, get the batteries! ;) And above all have fun!

The Future of Second Life!

The discussion that we hosted at LnL last Tuesday was about the topic "Second Life, the road to nowhere? - the future of SL". During the discussion the participants referred to their experiences in other Virtual Worlds comparing them to SL. It was interesting to see that most of the participants considered Second Life as one of the most interesting Virtual Realities, if not the most interesting at the moment. Despite very specific aspects such as technical problems (lag, viewer limitations, etc.), content theft or the lack of interesting financial opportunities, none of those present was seriously considering leaving SL. In everyone's opinion, the future of Second Life would become more appealing if there were a development in the quality of the technical aspects discussed and it would become far less appealing, in the opinion of some, if the access to Second Life were conditioned by the payment of a fee. It was a very interesting discussion and a very lively one as well! Join us next Tuesday at 2pm SLT for a new topic! :)

Discussion Tomorrow -- Second Life, the road to nowhere? - the future of SL

Second Life, the road to nowhere? - the future of SL

Many say that the economy has stagnated, companies are leaving SL, no one wants to buy land anymore, there are alternatives to SL that seem more attractive and there is a proliferation of virtual worlds, many actually very interesting financially. Every day we hear of sims closing and people moving to other virtual Realities. Is there a future for SL? Or is SL doomed to end sooner or later? Drop by LnL's Lounge and share your opinion!

Step Up! today :)

Content theft is more and more an important issue in Second Life. Every day, creators see their work being stolen, copied, resold, given out as a freebie. As recently as during Burning Life, many major SL creators and merchants saw huge chunks of their work copied and given out without their permissions. Whether creators are here for fun or for making a living, this is something that must be changed. The Step Up! campaign aims at raising awareness and educating all residents for this reality and for the urgent need for vigorous measures to fight against content theft. You can participate in this iniciative!

How?
1. be informed: http://stepupsl.wordpress.com/
2. get the Step Up! kiosk (drop by LnL and click the poster and the rotating box);
3. share it with friends and customers;
4. wear the orange campaign ribbon;
5. don'tupload anything to the grid today;
6. organise Step Up! events!
Again, this is about awareness and education on this issues!

Discussion yesterday - SL is just a game!

Yesterday's discussion at LnL stirred things up a bit! This seems to be a very controversial topic as some believe it to be a game, as life is, in a way, while others were adamant in defending that Second Life is certainly not a game. Too many things have become important for everyone to consider SL a game, things such as friends, work, education. On the other hand, some were of the opinion that Second Life provided opportunities for playing a game, for instance roleplaying or enjoying the game(s) within this rich virtual reality. It was a very lively and fast-paced discussion with extremely interesting people and very good arguments on both sides!

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Discussion tomorrow - SL is just a game!!

Tomorrow's discussion is a promising one!
SL is just a game, some say. It's a more developed way of "playing dolls". It's a fantasy world and nothing else! Do you agree/disagree? What is your opinion on this? Drop by LnL's Lounge at 2pm SLT and share your thoughts on this topic! It will certainly be a hot discussion!

Sunday, November 1, 2009

Step Up! against content theft

Step up! is a campaign that aims at raising awareness about content theft. The concept originates with a small group – Angie Mornington, Gabrielle Riel, Gwen Carillon and Saffia Widdershins. But more and more people are now becoming involved.

Content theft happens when the work of a creator is stolen and sold or given away without the creator's agreement-- hair, clothes, skins, houses, furniture, transport, music, etc. Content theft discourages creators from creating rich and valuable content making your Second Life less interesting.

So to fight against content theft, join the campaign:

1. be informed: http://stepupsl.wordpress.com/
2. get the Step Up! kiosk (drop by LnL and click the poster -- on the photo above, top left corner -- and the rotating box);
3. share it with friends and customers;
4. wear the orange campaign ribbon;
5. boycott uploads on November 5;
6. organise Step Up! events!

Remember, on November 5th we will demonstrate our commitment by NOT uploading anything to the grid. Let's send a clear message to Linden Lab that we've had ENOUGH content theft!

This campaign is about awareness, education and celebration! Join us!

Happy Halloween!

Our friend Niicolee, London and I went for a Halloween stroll! And look where we ended up, at the Haunted Mansion! This is a very cool place, with plenty of areas to explore. The sim is called Prairie Shores and one of the project's mentors is Second Pride. You have to check out their Halloween ride (get the HUD at the door before going in and follow their indications so you can fully enjoy the sound effects and the narrator). Then board one of the cars and hold on to your seats! A friendly warning... keep your hands and feet inside the car at all times! O.o hehe
After the ride, explore the place a bit and you'll end up finding a devilish dance room with plenty of scary devices!Beware! You'll end up... dead..! O.O LOL
Anyway, it was for the sake of fun! Do drop by for a visit! It's well worth the time! We had a lot of fun! :)
Happy Halloween from LnL!

A very cool friend, Dominick!

London and I visited a good friend of ours, Dominick Manatiso! Dom has been working hard along with some very cool friends on the sim San Padre Bike World! It's a really nice place to visit with some of the most friendly people in SL! The sim has a lot of bike related stores, including Dom's Southern Choppers and daily live music! Another location you can visit in the sim is the San Padre Romantic Forest & Mall with a really nice atmosphere and plenty of music too!

In the picture above, Dom is wearing a gift London and I gave him, an LnL outfit especially made for him! He loved it! We are glad he did! Below, a photo of us with the bikes Dom gave us! We love them!
Thanks! :)

Ongoing Hunts!

Phew! This has been a lot of work!! Check out the wall with all the ongoing and upcoming hunts at LnL! There's still time to drop by and pick up the prizes for the Eros Quest, the Vampire Hunt, the MHOH2 and the Myths and Legends Hunt! The first two end on October 31st and the last two end on November 15.
Starting on November 1, we will have the Falling Leaves Hunt and on November 8, the Thanksgiving Hunt. Later in December, we already have the Candy Cane and the Christmas Hunt scheduled and in January, the 40 Below Hunt! As you can see, no lack of activity!! :)

Looks are a killer!! ;)

In the new room setup London created (great job!), we gathered to discuss the topic "Looks are a killer"! The impact of image in SL and why we decide to look the way we do were two of the most debated topics. Some mentioned the fact that the way we look may be an extension of how we look in RL, others said that it was the expression of a wish! Interesting was the discussion about non-human avatars. Most seemed to agree that having such an avatar carries a message - take me for who I am and not only for what I look like!
Next week, we will meet again with a new topic! I will post it a few days ahead! Keep an eye on the blog. See you Tuesday, back at the usual 2pm SLT schedule, in the LnL Lounge!

Monday, October 26, 2009

Discussion tomorrow at 3pm SLT!

Topic for tomorrow: Looks are a killer!

The way we decide to portrait ourselves shows a lot about who we are in RL and what we expect from Second Life. What do you think? Do you agree? Or do you find this statement a total nonsense? Join us for this hopefully controversial discussion in the LnL Lounge, at 3pm!

Sunday, October 25, 2009

To be released later today!!!! Outfit -19!

Outfit 19 is an impressive Vampire outfit in black with discreet touches of red! Both the shirt and the pants are amazing! The pants are mod so you can adjust to the type of shoewear. Interesting places!!

In our roamings about, London and I visited a few sims! Here are two locations we have selected for you to enjoy! :)We took this picture (above) at the Garden of Love and Romance at Hero. It's a beautiful place with a lot of hidden corners to be with your special one. And we had a lot of fun as you see!! ;)
Have a drink and a quiet moment to talk to someone or go dancing in one of the locations where you can have some privacy!
As we were in a dancing mood, we headed to the SS Galaxy where there's a huge dance hall! This time it was decorated for Halloween! Dress up and enjoy jazzy music! And blues and blues too!!
Invite someone you like and enjoy a quiet evening dancing away and listening to very good music! :)

What a ride! :)

LnL has been very busy! New releases and hunts brought a lot of visitors to us. We have met some very nice people among which Dybbuk Denimore who was doing the Make Him Over Hunt 2 (on the photo, Dybbuk is wearing the LnL prize).
Thank you for your words, Dybbuk. They mean a lot to LnL!
